129 Oaks
129 Oaks was a project first initiated by Iain Cheesman. Following on from Home Front we decided to work together again for this exhibition at Aigantighe Gallery in Timaru. This project considers the way both heroic achievement and war is memorialised. The work was built around references to 129 Oak trees given to atheletes by Hitler for gold medal acheivement in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. One of these oak trees was given to Mile runner Jack Lovelock, who in turn sent it to his old school, Timaru Boys High school where it was planted and remains, now a healthy mature tree. Pennie Hunt wrote a text that accompanied the exhibition. Iain and I have worked together before because although our work is stylistically different there are crossovers in the way we approach our work.
